A court in Rangpur on Thursday sentenced a school teacher to life in prison for raping one of his students in the last year.
Lifer Monwarul Islam Mithu, 40, is an English teacher at Shyampur Sugar Mills High School in Badarganj upazila and a resident of Putimari area in Sadar upazila of the district.
The district Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Judge Md Rokonuzzaman handed down.
The court also fined him Tk 1 lakh.
The case statement and court sources said Mithu violated the girl at the school premises on June 30, 2020.
The victim informed her family about the incident and on the same day she lodged a rape case against the teacher with Badarganj Police Station.
