Onrush of water from the upstream and incessant rainfall have turned the flood situation worse in six upazilas of the district, rendering more than 60,000 people marooned.The affected upazilas are Kurigran Sadar, Nageshwari, Ulipur, Chilmari, Roumari and Razibpur.According to the district’s Water Development Board (WDB), more than 150 villages have gone under water following increase in the water level of the Brahmaputra River.Water of the Brahmaputra is flowing 31 centimetres above its danger mark while that of the Dudhkumar is flowing one centimetre over the danger line.On the other hand, water levels of the Dharala and Tista rivers have fallen by four centimeters and nine centimeters respectively.At least 70 people lost their homes due to the river erosion in the char (shoal emerged from the riverbed) areas of the district.
