The High Court has granted one year bail to Sunamganj resident Jhumon Das, who was arrested in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA) on charge of defaming Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque on social media.
The bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajal passed the order on Thursday.
The court also said he cannot leave Sunamganj without the trial court’s permission.
Advocates ZI Khan Panna, Nahid Sultana and Ashraf Ali stood for Jhumon Das while Assistant Attorney General Mohammad Mizanur Rahman represented the state.
On 15 March, Hefazat organized a rally named ‘Shan-e-Risalat’ in Sunamganj’s Dirai upazila where it’s former Ameer Junaid Babunagari and joint secretary general Manunul Haque delivered sermons.
Later, Jhumon allegedly posted a status on his facebook account over the remarks of Mamunul.
On March 16, Jhumon was detained by police and Md Abdul Karim, Sub Inspector of Shalla Police Station filed a DSA case against him.
