Body recommends action against Evaly

An inter-ministerial committee headed by the Committee Ministry has recommended taking legal action against e-commerce company Evaly facing allegations of irregularities.

Hafizur Rahman, the director general of the World Trade Organization cell of the ministry and the chief of the committee, came up with disclosure on Tuesday after a meeting of the committee at the Secretariat.

"Not taking any responsibility directly, the ministry will refer the e-commerce companies (Evaly, E-orange, Dhamaka, and so on) to the law enforcers so that they can take measures as per law. This is the committee's recommendation or decision," he told the media.

For this, a letter will be sent to the Ministry of Home, he said.

On July 17, a Dhaka court issued an overseas travel ban on Evaly Chairman Shamima Nasrin and its Managing Director Md Rassel after the Anti-Corruption Commission had filed a petition to bar the duo from leaving the country as part of its probe into the e-commerce platform's alleged cheating with customers.

On August 27, 2020, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of Bangladesh Bank directed the banks concerned to freeze accounts of Evaly, Nasrin, and Rassel.
