A Dhaka court has sentenced six people in a case lodged over the murder of former USAID official Julhas Mannan and his friend Tonoy Majumder.
Judge Mojibur Rahman of Dhaka’s Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal court passed the order on Tuesday.
The death-row convicts are: sacked army major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Zia, Akram Hossen, Mozammel Hussain alias Saymon, Arafat Rahman, Sheikh Abdullah and Asadullah. Of them, Syed and Akram are on the run.
The court fined them Tk 50,000 each in default of which they have to serve six more months in jail and it also acquitted two others people in the case.
The acquitted people are Sabbirul Haque Chowdhury and Mawlana Junayed Ahmmed.
On April, 2016, some miscreants hacked Julhas and Tonoy to death at their house in the capital’s Kalabagan.
Later, Julhas’ elder brother Minhaz Mannan Emon filed a murder case with Kalabagan Police Station and Mohammad Shamim, Sub Inspector of the police station also filed a case under the Arms Act.
On May 12, 2019, Investigation Officer of the case and Inspector of the Counter Terrorism Unit Muhammad Monirul Islam submitted a charge sheet to the court against eight people.
