Rupganj factory fire: 8 including Sajeeb Group chairman remanded

Sajeeb Group Chairman Abul Hashem and seven others have been put on a four-day remand in a case filed over the deaths of 52 people in a factory fire in Narayanganj's Rupganj.

The rest seven accused are Sajeep Group's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shahenshah Azad, Abul Hashem's four sons - the group's deputy managing director (DMD) Hasib Bin Hashem alias Sajeeb, directors Tarek Ibrahim, Tawsib Ibrahim, and Tanzim Ibrahim; Hashem Foods Ltd's deputy general manager (DGM) Mamunur Rashid and its civil engineer and administrative officer Md Alauddin.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Fahmida Khanam passed the order on Saturday after police produced them before the court, seeking a 10-day remand, confirmed the court inspector Asaduzzaman.

Bhulta Police Outpost inspector Nazim Uddin lodged the case against eight people today.

Earlier on Thursday, the factory of Hashem Foods Ltd, which manufactures various juice, soft drinks, and food items, caught a deadly fire.

Immediately following the incident, three people were reported to have died and more than 50 received injuries.

On the following day, the fire service personnel recovered the bodies of 49 more people from the rubble, taking the tally to 52.

Hashem Foods Ltd is, however, a sister concern of Sajeeb Group.
