The Law Ministry today sent its opinion to the Home Ministry on the appeal filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s family seeking permission to take her abroad for medical treatment.
Dr. Md Rezaul Karim, Public Relation Officer of the Law ministry, confirmed the matter to Jago News.
Khaleda tested positive for Coronavirus on April 11. She was admitted to the Evercare Hospital in the capital on April 27. Later, she was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit of the hospital on May 3.
Her younger brother Shamim Iskander went to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal’s house in Dhanmondi on 5 May and submitted the application to him. Later, it was sent to the Ministry of Law for their opinion.
To be noted, amid the coronavirus outbreak, the government freed Khaleda Zia from jail on conditions for six months on an executive order suspending her sentences on March 25 last year.
The BNP chief landed in jail on February 8, 2018, after a special court sentenced her to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. On October 30, 2018, the High Court raised her punishment to 10 years.
