Hefazat assistant secy gen Kashemi held

Hefazat-e-Islam's central assistant secretary general and its Dhaka city vice president Khurshid Alam Kashemi has been arrested.

A team of the detective branch (Wari division) of police nabbed him, also the nayeb-e-ameer of Khelafat Majlish, from the capital's Mohammadpur area around 5pm on Wednesday.

Confirming the matter to Jago News, DB (Wari division) deputy commissioner Abdul Ahad said Kashemi has been shown arrested in a case filed over the violence at Shapla Chattar in the capital's Motijheel on May 5, 2013.

For the last couple of days, the law enforcers arrested several central leaders of the Qawmi madrasa-based organization, including its joint secretary general Mamunul Haque.

They are being shown arrested in different cases, including ones filed over the 2013 incident.

Hefazat-e-Islam, however, staged demonstrations on March 26 protesting the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.

The protests turned violent in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Chattogram's Hathazari upazila, and Brahmanbaria district, leaving several deads in the latter two places.

Following the casualties, the Qawmi madrasa-based organization enforced a countrywide hartal on March 28 that caused unrest across the country.
