Hefazat's Dhaka city chief remanded

Hefazat-e-Islam's central joint secretary general and Dhaka city president Allama Junayed Al Habib has been placed on a seven-day remand in custody.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahinur Rahman on Sunday gave the order after police produced him before the court, seeking a 10-day remand.

Earlier on Saturday, the detectives arrested the Hefazat leader in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over the violence at Shapla Chattar in the capital's Motijheel on May 5, 2013.

Amid the arrests of the organization's several leaders, including Junayed Habib, for the last couple of days, the law enforcers today arrested its central joint secretary general and Dhaka unit general secretary Mamunul Haque.

They are being shown arrested in different cases, including ones filed over the 2013 incident.

Hefazat-e-Islam, however, staged a demonstration on March 26 protesting the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.

The protests turned violent in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Chattogram's Hathazari upazila, and Brahmanbaria district, leaving several deads in the latter two places.

Follwing the casualties, the Qawmi madrasa-based organization enforced a countrywide hartal on March 28 that caused unrest across the country.
