Coronavirus: Bangladesh sees highest deaths in a day

Bangladesh government on Sunday reported 78 coronavirus deaths, the highest number of fatalities in a day.

Earlier on Saturday, it recorded 77 more people's deaths from the virus, hitting the second highest single-day fatalities. 

In the last 24 hours, 5,819 people contracted the highly contagious disease, the health directorate said in a press release today.

With this, the country's total deaths and infections stood at 9,739 and 6,84,756 respectively till date.

Of the total patients, 5,76,590 recovered, with 4,212 made recovery in the last 24 hours.

The daily count came from test of 29,376 samples in the past day.

Bangladesh first reported its COVID-19 cases on March 8 last year. Since then the country has been struggling to limit spread of the highly contagious virus.

Coronavirus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to newer countries and territories.

Till date, the epidemic infected 136,128,812 people and killed 2,941,257 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, total number of people who recovered from the coronavirus pandemic reached 109,513,119 across the world.
