'Swadhin doesn't belong to Juba League'

Sunamganj district Juba League on Saturday claimed that Shahidul Islam Swadhin arrested in connection with the attacks on Hindu homes in Shalla upazila does not belong to the party.

Khandaker Manzur Ahmed, joint convener of the district Juba League, made the claim in a press briefing at district Awami League office this afternoon.

In a written statement, Manzur said, "Since 2007, Juba League has been without committee in Derai and Shalla upazilas . So, those who are spreading that Shahidul Islam Swadhin is a leader of Juba League, they are wrong."

The party saw this spreading as a conspiracy to hide the main incident, he said in the statement.

According to the locals, however, Swadhin is the leader of a ward Juba League.

Earlier on Friday night, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Shahidul Islam Swadhin from Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar district.

Attacks and lootings were carried out on as many as 87 Hindu houses in Noagaon village in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj on Wednesday over a Facebook post in which a Hindu youth had allegedly criticized the speech of Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque.

On the following night, Habibpur Union Parishad chairman Bibekananda Majumder Bakul filed a case over the incident where he made Swadhin, also chairman of Tarol UP under Derai upazila, prime accused.
