Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday said BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s application for extension of imprisonment suspension is being examined.
“The time (the period for suspension on Begum Zia’s imprisonment) seems to be coming to an end. That is why they have applied for further extension of her imprisonment suspension by relaxing some conditions,” he said while talking to reporters at his Secretariat office, reports BSS.
The minister said the application is being examined for the next course of action, moreover It will also be sent to the law ministry.”
Replying to a question, Kamal said they (Khaleda’s family members) have again applied seeking extension of suspended prison as she could not get treatment during the COVID -19 pandemic.”
He said steps will be taken after discussing the issue with officials concerned.
Khaleda Zia’s family members applied for further extension of imprisonment suspension yesterday.
Earlier, government extended the imprisonment suspension of Khaleda Zia for six months on September 25, 2020 and the 76-year-old BNP chief was released from jail for six months on March 25, 2020 after gazette notification considering her age and humanitarian ground following an application by her family.
Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 on October 29, 2018, sentenced BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and three others to seven-year imprisonment each in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
The court also fined them TK 10 lakh each, in default, to suffer more six months in jail.
The High Court on October 30, 2018, enhanced BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s five-year jail term to 10 years in the case, allowing a revision plea filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against the lower court judgment.
