Eight people were killed and more than 50 others injured in a collision between two buses on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet on Friday morning.
The deceased were identified as Al Mahmud Sad Imran Khan, 33, a lecturer in the department of Forensic Medicine at Sylhet Women's Medical College; Monzur Ali, 38, and Zahangir Hossain, 24, respectively driver, and helper of 'Ena Pariban', residents of Barkha village in Osmaninagar upazila, in Sylhet district; Salman Khan, 25, supervisor of the bus and resident of Mithabhara village in Jagannathpur upazila and Rahima Khatun, 30, daughter of Mofij Ali of Bauwali village in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district; Shah Kamal, 27, of Akhalia area in Sylhet city; Nurul Amin, 50, of Rajaniakandi under Sarail Police Station in Brahmanbaria; and Sagor Ahmed, 29, of Wari in capital Dhaka.
Dakshin Surma Police Station officer in-charge Md Monirul Islam said a bus of 'London Express' and a bus of 'Ena Paribahan' collided head-on in Rashidpur area around 7am, leaving six dead on the spot and several injured.
The injured were rushed to Osmani Medical College Hospital, Sylhet where two others died, he added.
Jashim Ahmed, a passenger of London Express, said the bus driver repeateldy tried to overtake other buses despite requests from the passengers to drive carefully that caused the accident.
