Mehidy Hasan Miraz achieved two unique feats simultaneously on Saturday as he became the fastest and also the youngest Bangladeshi bowler to take 100 wickets in Test cricket.
The feat came during the third day of the second and final Test against West Indies when he induced an edge off Shayne Moseley’s bat in the ninth over of the West Indies’ second innings today.
He entered into the Test, needing two wickets to reach the milestone but it eluded him during the first innings as he took just one wicket. However in second innings of West Indies, he took little time to inscribe his name along with three fellow spinners—Mohammad Rafique, Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam.
What made his feat unique is that he is the only off-spinner in the list of 100 wickets taken for Bangladesh. The rest of the three are left-arm spinners.
The feat of Miraz came at the age of 23 and in his 24th Test.
He went past Tajiul Islam in terms of being the quickest to the feat. Taijul had achieved the feat in his 25th Test at the age of 27.
He eclipsed Shakib Al Hasan in terms of being the youngest to earn the feat. Shakib had reached the landmark of 100 Test wickets at the age of 25 and while playing in his 28th Test. He is the fourth youngest bowler in the world to achieve the feat after Daniel Vettori, Harbhajan Singh and Saqlain Mushtaque.
Mohammad Rafique who opened the club of 100 Test wickets for Bangladeshi bowlers reached here in his 33rd Test match.
Miraz began his career in 2016, just after leading Bangladesh Under-19 to third place in the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Dhaka. He shot into limelight in his debut series against England, taking 19 wickets in two Tests as Bangladesh drew the series 1-1. He so far claimed two 10-wicket haul and seven five-for in 24 Tests.
