Writ seeks HC directives to open educational institutions

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its directives to open the all educational institutions immediately.

Md Abdul Kayum Sarker, principal of Bhawal Mirzapur Public School and College in Sadar upazila of Gazipur, filed the writ on Thursday, confirmed his lawyer Faruk Alamgir Chowdhury.

Education secretary, the Directorate of Secondary & Higher Education director general, and University Grant Commission chairman have been made respondents in the writ, he said.

The bench of Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Mahmud Hasan Talukder is expected to hear the petition, Faruk added.

The lawyer said this writ was filed as no measure was taken despite sending a legal notice to secretary of the Ministry of Education on January 11 to open the educational institutions.

Lawyer Faruk also said the long school closure has been badly affected the students as they spend time roaming, watching TV and using smart phone instead of study.

The government had ordered all educational institutions to close on March 17 following an outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the country. Since then, the shutdown has been extended on several occasions, and most recently it has been extened until January 30.
