Nearly 50,000 Bangladeshi nationals were released from foreign jails in the last five years, according to a statistics placed by Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali in Parliament on Sunday.A total of 49,503 Bangladeshis got released from jails of 20 countries from 2012 to May, 2016 as per the statistics, says an English news agency.The minister came up with the information in the House replying to a tabled starred question from independent MP Abdul Matin (Moulvibazar-2).The highest 18,721 Bangladeshis were released from Malaysian jails during the period while 17,335 prisoners from Saudi jails and 5,000 from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) jails.Besides, 2,025 Bangladeshi prisoners were released from Singapore while 1,982 from Mexico, 875 from India (particularly New Delhi), 728 from Turkey, 720 from Jordan, 650 from Lebanon, 440 from Iraq, 377 from Myanmar, 250 from Hong Kong and 241 from Pakistan.Apart from this, 48 Bangladeshis were released from Nepal, 45 from Brunei, 35 from Belgium, 17 from Iran, nine from Korea, three from Libya and two from Morocco.The foreign minister said Bangladesh missions help repatriate Bangladeshi citizens releasing them from jails through negotiation with foreign governments in some cases.Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said Bangladesh has extradition treaties with two countries - India and the UAE.Bangladesh signed ‘the agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons (TSP)’ with the UAE in October 2014, he said replying to a starred question from Awami League MP MA Maleque (Dhaka-20).Earlier in 2010, Bangladesh signed the TSP agreement with India, the home minister said.
