Attorney General Mahbubey Alam laid to rest

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has been buried at Mirpur Intellectuals Graveyard in the capital. 

He was buried around 1pm on Monday after a namaz-e-janaza held on the premises of Supreme Court. Pesh Imam of the court’s mosque Abu Saleh Md Salim Ullah conducted the funeral prayer.

Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, other judges of the Appellate Division, cabinet members, eminent jurists, senior lawyers, politicians, leaders of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and Bangladesh Bar Council joined the janaza among others.

After the funeral prayer, tributes were paid on behalf of President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the longest serving attorney general of Bangladesh.

Mahbubey Alam, 71, passed away at the CMH around 7:25pm on Sunday, nearly four weeks after he was diagnosed with the deadly Covid-19.

He was admitted to the hospital on September 4 after being diagnosed with the viral disease. 

He had been the state's chief legal officer for 11 years, since January 13, 2009. He was also chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council, a position reserved for the attorney general.

President Hamid and Prime Minister Hasina, in their statements on Sunday, remembered his contributions in these cases and in establishing the rule of law.
