N’ganj mosque blast: Death toll rises to 24

Three more people, who sustained burn injuries in an explosion at a mosque in Narayanganj, died on Sunday while undergoing treatment, taking the death toll from the incident to 24.

The latest three victims were identified as Mohammad Ali Master, 55, Zulhas, 35, and Shamim Hasan, 45, confirmed Partha Shanker, residential surgeon at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

The other victims are Nadim, 45, Md Abdul Malek, 60, Imam of the mosque, Mizan, 34, Bahar Uddin, 55, Russel, 34, Md Nayan, 27, Kanchan Hawlader, 53, Rifat, 18, Mostofa Kamal, 34, Jubayer, 18, Sabbir, 21, Quddus Bepari, 72, Humayun Kabir, 70, Ibrahim, 43, Delwar Hossen, 48, Junaed, 17, Jamal, 40, Joynal Abedin, 40, Maenuddin, 12, and Jewel, 7. 

Now 13 people who suffered burn injuires are receiving treatment at the burn institute. 

However, 22 bodies out of 24 were handed over to the respective families

Six air-conditioner at Baitus Salah Jame Mosque in Sadar upazila exploded during Isha prayer on Friday night, leaving more than 50 Muslim worshippers more or less burn injured.

Among them, critically hurt 37 were admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Visiting the spot, Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence deputy assistant director Abdullah Al Arefin on Friday night said  gas accumulated inside the mosque from a pipeline leak may have caused the blast.

Three probe bodies were formed by the fire service and civil defence, Titas Gas authorities, and the district administration over the incident.
