Fresh floods maroon 15000 families in Lalmonirhat

Water level of the Teesta River has risen again, leaving around 15000 families marooned in coastal areas of Lalmonirhat.

Onrush of water from the upstream and heavy rains caused fresh floods and erosion in the coastal areas of four upazilas.

At 12 noon on Saturday, the river was flowing 20cm above the danger mark at Dalia Point of Teesta Barrage.

Water Development Board was controlling water flow by opening 44 gates to protect the barrage.

The 400-foot sand embankment at Mahishkhocha in Aditmari upazila is at risk of being damaged due to the flood.

Babul Hossain, resident of Ramaniganj in Hatibandha upazila, said, "I have been helpless for six days losing house in river but still now none extended helping hands."

Hatibandha Upazila project implementation official Ferdous Ahmed said a list of 200 families who were affected by river erosion has been sent to authorities concerned.

The families would be helped soon after the assistance comes, he added.

WDB executive engineer Robiul Islam said water level of the Teesta River rose due to onrush of water from the upstream and heavy rains.

As a result, people residing in char and coastal areas were marooned, Robiul said, adding that the flood situation may worsen.

Regarding this, deputy commissioner Abu Zafar said they fear flood in third phase on the bank of Teesta River.
