The coronavirus related deaths in Bangladesh neared 500 as the country on Sunday reported the biggest daily jump in the fatalities.
In the past 24 hours, samples of 8909 people were examined. Among them, 1532 tested positive for COVID-19, making the country's total to 33,610, DGHS's ADG prof Dr Nasima Sultana said.
During the period, 28 more people died from coronavirus. With this, the number of deaths from the deadly virus stood at 480, she mentioned in Directorate General of Health Services' regular bulletin on the pathogen.
The official also said a total of 6,901 COVID-19 patients recovered, with 415 new ones.
She also ssaid that a total of 2,43,583 samples were examined since the outbreak started in the country.
Prof Nasima called on all to stay at home and follow health guidelines issued by the health department to stem the transmission of the pathogen.
Bangladesh first reported its coronavirus cases on March 8. Since then the country has been witnessing increase in the infections and deaths.
The highly contagious virus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to 213 countries and territories.
As of Sunday, the pathogen infected 5,418,513 people and killed 344,207 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.
However, total recovery from the coronavirus pandemic reached 2,254,432 across the world.
