9 killed as cyclone Amphan hits Bangladesh

At least nine people were killed as super cyclonic storm Amphan made landfall along the coastline of India and Bangladesh on Wednesday.

The deceased are from Jashore, Patuakhali, Bhola, Pirojpur, Chattogram and Satkhira.

In Patuakhali, a worker of Cyclone Preparation Programme drowned while conducting an awareness campaign on Nanda canal in Kalapara upazila.   

Later, the body of Shah Alam Mir was recovered from the canal in the afternoon, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Hasnat Md Shahidul Haque.

In Galachipa upazila, a child along with his family was rushing towards a nearby shelter amid strong wind when a tree branch fell on Rashed’s head, killing him on the spot at Panpotti.

Officer-in-Charge of Galachipa Police Station Mostafizur Rahman confirmed the matter.

In Pirojpur, 55-year-old Mozibur Rahman died after the wall of his house caved in on him at Mathbaria amid storm in the evening, said Additional Superintendent of Police Molla Azad Hossain.

In Bhola, two people were killed during the stormy weather caused by the cyclonic storm.

The 70-year-old victim Siddique Fakir died after a tree fell on him while he was on his motorcycle in Char Fashion upazila, said Dakkhin Aicha police station OC Harunur Rashid.

The other deceased Rafiqul Islam died after a trawler carrying him capsized near Ilisha Rajapur Ghat in Sadar upazila, confirmed Sadar police station OC Md Enayet Hossain.

In Satkhira, a 40-year-old woman named Karimunnessa, died after being hit by a falling tree branch while she was out collecting mangoes during a storm in Kamarnagar of Sadar upazila, confirmed Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Asaduzzaman.

In Jashore, a mother and her daughter died on the spot after a tree fell on them Chowgacha upazila at night.

In Chattogram, a youth named Md Salauddin drowned in tidal water created by the influence of cylone Amphan at noon. Md Solaiman, Inspector (investigation) of Sandwip Police Station, confirmed the death to Jago News.
