Jordan detectives have detained a Bangladeshi expatriate journalist. The detainee is Selim Akash, Jordan Correspondent of Jago News.
He was detained from his residence on Monday noon (local time). He is now in police custody.
His family members and colleagues alleged that he has been detained over a news report. Some officials of Bangladesh embassy in Jordan are behind the detention.
According to the source, Jago News published a news titled “coronavirus: 30,000 Bangladesh facing shortage of food in Jordan” on April 5. Selim covered the news and also mentioned that Bangladesh embassy didn’t take any step in this crisis.
After publishing the news, some officials of the embassy were expressing their dissatisfactions, Selim’s family members alleged.
His wife Jona Akash said, her husband was produced before the court in a case filed under the Information and Technology Act.
When contacted, Bangladesh ambassador in Jordan Nahida Sobhan denied all allegations.
She told Jago News that, after being informed of the detention of Selim, they have contacted with the country’s foreign ministry.
“We didn’t know why he has been detained. Lockdown is going on in Jordan due to the coronavirus, but we are trying our best to know about his detention,” she added.
