The number of coronavirus cases have surged to 1,231 in Bangladesh while the country's death toll from the virus stood at 50.
In the past 24 hours, samples of 1,740 people were examined. Of them, 219 people tested positive for COVID-19, the highest single-day spike, and four died from the virus, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malik on Wednesday.
With this, coronavirus patients are now 1,231 and deaths from the virus 50 in the country, he added.
In DGHS's regular bulletin on coronavirus, the minister also said seven more coronavirus patients recovered from the deadly virus, taking the total recovery to 49.
Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad, and prof Dr Nasima Sultana, director general and additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services respectively, were present at the online briefing.
Bangladesh first reported its coronavirus cases on March 8. Since then the country has been witnessing increase in the infections and deaths.
COVID first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to 210 countries and territories.
As of Wednesday, the epidemic infected 2,004,989 people and killed 126,830 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.
However, total recovery from the coronavirus pandemic reached 485,362 across the world.
