Khaleda appears before court

The Chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Khaleda Zia appeared before a Dhaka court to place her self-defence statement in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.A vehicle carrying her arrived at the court premises around 10:45am on Thursday. Confirming the matter, Syrul Kabir Khan, a staff of her BNP chairperson’s media wing, told she left her residence in Gulshan area of the capital around 10am.On May 19, the court warned that it would issue an arrest warrant against Khaleda if she failed to appear before the court on June 2 to give statement defending herself under section 342 of the CrPC in the charitable trust graft case. In 2008, the ACC filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against Khaleda, her son Tarique Rahman and four others for embezzlement of over Tk 2.1 crore by forming a ‘fake’ trust which existed only on paper.The anti-graft watchdog filed another case in 2011, accusing four persons, including Khaleda, on charges of abusing power to collect a fund of Tk 6.19 crore for the Zia Charitable Trust.
