Great to be an IPL winner: Mustafiz

Mustafizur Rahman’s journey from a Bangladeshi village bordering India to stardom is a fascinating modern-day tale with few parallels in cricket. The enormously gifted left-arm quick’s departure for Sussex has, however, been delayed. As a County, Sussex remains very dear to us, in particular, as legends Ranjitsinhji, his nephew Duleepsinhji and Mansur Ali Khan ‘Tiger’ Pataudi have all captained it.Mustafizur’s going to England has been delayed because of a hamstring problem and, possibly, an ankle issue, Telegraph India reports. An architect of the Hyderabad franchise’s maiden IPL triumph, Mustafizur has gone to Dhaka for an ‘assessment’ by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)’s medical team. Specifically, by the national team’s physio Baizid-ul Islam. The 20-year-old Mustafizur is special and indispensable to the extent one can be. Mustafizur reached the Bangladesh capital late on Monday after a few hours in transit here. He’d arrived in Calcutta on a Jet Airways flight from Bangalore.Understandably, Mustafizur chose to speak little when approached by The Telegraph. Besides, he’s most at ease confounding batsmen, not talking big.‘ Akhon aami kichu bolte parbo na... Aage BCB assessment korbe... Only after that will I know when I can go to Sussex,’ Mustafizur told this Reporter.Where national duties go, Mustafizur isn’t required before Bangladesh tour India in September. One Test is confirmed, but even ODIs are possible. The Sunrisers Hyderabad played 17 matches and Mustafizur missed just one game, Qualifier 2 against the Gujarat Lions. He collected 17 wickets, the second-highest for the franchise, after IPL IX topper Bhuvneshwar Kumar.Overall, Mustafizur finished joint No. 5 on his IPL debut. Dwayne Bravo and Mitchell McClenaghan are the others who also ended on 17 wickets.Mustafizur’s tally, and the influence he had on the Sunrisers campaign, fetched him the Emerging Player award.‘Aamar IPL career darun bhabe start koreche... Feels great to have become an IPL winner in my very first year,’ Mustafizur, who was quickly surrounded by well-wishers wanting selfies, said during the brief interaction.Mustafizur made his Bangladesh debut last April and his guile, coupled with excellent control, made him an impact bowler instantly.Injuries, however, are part of the business of fast bowling. Moreover, Mustafizur’s body is still developing. He needs to accept that. For the record, Mustafizur has played for Bangladesh across formats. Clearly, the workload for his national team and franchises has to be monitored. One hopes that Mustafizur isn’t off cricket for a length of time, for he has to make the most of the opportunity provided by Sussex.
