Relief for consumers as onion prices substantially fall

Significant decrease in the prices of onion after India lifted export ban brought a relief for the consumers.

Local variety of the key cooking ingridient came down to Tk 40 per kg which was Tk 100-120 in the beginning of March.

Visiting different city markets, including Shyambazar, Karwan Bazar, Rampura, on Friday traders were seen selling local variety of onion at Tk 40 to 50 a kg.

Earlier in September last year neighbour India imposed a ban on onion export to Bangladesh to keep domestic supplies stable.

After the announcement, prices of onion in Bangladeshi markets skyrocketed up to Tk 250 per kg.

In various steps taken by the government, prices of the spice dropped in phases.
