PM for common SAARC platform for remittance flow

Bangladesh on Saturday proposed developing a common platform for flow of remittance in the SAARC region and said Sri Lanka may share its initiative to constitute a financial centre to this end.Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina came up with the proposal in a meeting with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena in the Japanese city of Nagoya.‘The SAARC nations may develop a common platform for flow of remittance in the region,’ she said.Both the Bangladesh Prime Minister and the Sri Lankan President arrived in Nagoya at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister to attend the G7 Outreach Meeting.Briefing reporters after the meeting, Senior Secretary of the Economic Resources Division M Mejbahuddin said Bangladesh has shown interest in the financial centre being developed in Colombo.‘We have requested the Sri Lankan President to share this mechanism with us so that we can take necessary steps if needed in this regard after necessary review,’ he said.Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim also briefed reporters about the issues that came up for discussion.Ihsanul Karim said bilateral issues were discussed with the Sri Lankan president. The Prime Minister extended her sympathy to the Sri Lankan president for the loss of lives and property due to recent devastating flood, reports BSS.The press secretary said the Prime Minister mentioned the sanction of Taka one billion for the flood victims saying she would give necessary directives to send necessary relief materials for the affected people in line with a requirement of the Sri Lankan government.Karim said the two leaders recalled the historic relations between the two countries and agreed to further strengthen the ties. The Sri Lankan president informed the Bangladesh Prime Minister of the reconciliation process in his country to restore a peaceful atmosphere.Principal Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the Prime Minister urged the Sri Lankan president to import jute goods from Bangladesh along with pharmaceutical items.As the Sri Lankan president requested Bangladesh Premier to take necessary measures to resume Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight on Dhaka-Colombo route, Sheikh Hasina assured him of exploring the opportunity.Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque said Sri Lankan President Sirisena is likely to visit Bangladesh in December next.
