19 sued over trawler capsize in Bay, 8 detained

Police today filed a case against 19 people in connection with capsize of a trawler in the Bay of Bengal that left 15 Rohingya people dead. 

Eight people were detained from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, said Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station.

Rohingya and local people are among the detainees.

Police said, 72 people, who were rescued alive from the Bay on Tuesday, were kept at Teknaf Police Station. Apart from, one more person was also rescued.

At least 15 people died and many others went missing as a trawler carrying Rohingyas capsized in the Bay of Bengal in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Monday midnight. 

The incident of capsize took place in north-west Bay of Bengal at Cheradip in Saint Martin’s Island when they were heading towards Malaysia illegally.
