The key cooking ingredient's price neared double century per kg after a brief respite.

On Saturday morning, local variety of onion was selling at Tk 160-190 per kg in capital Dhaka's markets that was 100-120 one week ago.

Sharp increase was also seen in prices of onion imported from China and Egypt. It was selling at Tk 80-100 a kg which was 50-60 last week.

Earlier, consumers had to buy onion at record Tk 250 per kg as market of the spice turned into unusual after neighbour India stopped exporting onion in the country on September last year.

But various steps taken by the government and arrival of new supplies of onions imported from different countries, including Egypt and Pakistan, helped somewhat decrease to the price.

Businesses said onion supply lessened in the markets as farmers cannot pick the spice from field due to drizzling rain in different places of the country for the last couple of days.
