10 get death for killing medicine shop owner Mazharul

Ten people have been awarded death penalty for killing a medicine shop owner Mazharul Islam alias Paltan in Nandail upazila of Mymensingh.

Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman handed down the verdict on Tuesday. 

The condemned convicts are: Eklas Uddin alias Jewel, Abul Kashem alias Bachchu Member, Kabir Mia, Abul Kashem, Badal Mia, Faruk Mia, Ruma Akter, Abul Kalam Azad alias Pinu Daktar, Chandan, and Shukkur Ali alias Ashraf Ali. Among them, Faruk Mia and Ruma Akter are fugitive. 

The speedy tribunal also acquitted Aftab Uddin alias Akram Ali, Badrul Alam alias Badrul, Ismail Hossain, Kazal Mia, Rafiq, Abu Siddique and Dulal. 

Earlier on December 5, the court fixed December 24 to pronounce verdict in the case after prosecution and defense both concluded their respective arguments. 

According the case statement, the accused first killed Mazharul in his shop at Shialdhara Bazar in the morning of February 28 or March 1, 2007, and then locked the shop leaving the body inside.

On the day of killing, Beauty Akter, sister of the deceased, lodged a case with Nandail Police Station in this connection. 

Investigation officer Nandail Police Station inspector Jashim Uddin on January 31, 2008 submitted chargesheet against 18 people in the case. 

Among them, accused Jabber Mohari died. Later, court framed charges against 17 accused in the case.
