Shafiqur sworn in as Jamaat’s new Ameer

Dr Shafiqur Rahman, the newly elected Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has been sworn in as the new Ameer of the party.

The party’s Chief Election Commissioner Maolana ATM Masum administered the oath to Shafiqur at a house in Dhaka on Thursday.

Former Ameer Maqbul Ahmed, Nayeb-e-Ameer Professor Mujibur Rahman, Professor Miah Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Maolana Rafiqul Islam Khan and Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad were present during this time.

On November 12, Jamaat’s central Election Commission announced Shafiqur, who was the party’s secretary general, as the Ameer of the party after more than three weeks’ voting. 

Dr Shafiqur Rahman passed his MBBS exam from Sylhet Medical College in 1983. During his student life, Dr Shafiqur acted as the president of the Sylhet unit of Chhatra Shibir (the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami). Later in 1985, he joined the Central Majlish-e-Shura. 

In 1998, he was nominated as a member of the central administrative body of Jamaat, and from 2011 till now, he had been working as the secretary general.
