Corporal punishment on pupils: Bangladeshi Imam expelled in Italy

A Bangladeshi Imam in Italy has been expelled allegedly for beating and humiliating his pupils.

A court in Padua, a city in Northern Italy’s Veneto region, passed the expulsion order against Junayed Ahmed, 19.

As a result, the Imam has lost legitimacy to stay in the country and local administration is being forced to send him home.

Local media and Italy's Home Minister on Monday confirmed the matter.

Earlier, Italy police arrested Junayed on charge of using corporal punishment on his pupils, age between five to 10, and humiliating them while teaching Quran at 'Bangladesh Cultural Center Masjid' in Padua.

Erfanul Haque, councilor at Bangladesh Embassy in Italy, said it is not necessary for police to inform Bangladesh mission to send him to his country if he has legal passport.

If he has no passport, Italy police need to inform Bangladesh Embassy about his deportation, the official added.
