Water transport workers' strike on

The indefinite strike enforced by water transport workers began across the country on the wee hours of Saturday to press home their 11-point demand.

Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation called the strike on Friday, reports UNB.

The workers’ demand include hiking wages, providing risk allowance, stopping extortion, and ensuring clean water and food.

All types of vessels will stop operation on 33 routes including Dhaka’s Sadarghat, Chandpur, Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Vandira and Jhalakati.

Operation of lighterage vessels will also remain suspended at Chattogram river port.

Shah Alam Bhuiyan, president of Bangladesh Water Transport Workers’ Federation, said this will be the third time they are going on strike.

He said they have been forced to go on an indefinite strike since their demands are yet to be fulfilled, he added.
