A garment worker went to mosque to perform prayer locking house door when his wife was in but coming back he witnessed a devastating fire there that claimed her life.
Shocked Sumon Mia tried much to unlock the door to save his wife Sompa Akter, 22, who got trapped in the fire inside house but his all efforts went vain due to massiveness of the blaze.
Later, Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel rushed there and put out the fire but Sompa was found dead.
The heartbreaking incident took place at the home of Ilyas Sarder of Muslimnagar Nayabazar area in Narayanganj's Fatulla on Friday evening.
Hailing from Faitamari area under Madarganj Police Station in Jamalpur, Sumon Mia along with his wife was living in a rented house at the home. The couple worked at a same garment factory in Fatulla.
Sumon crying said they got married seven to eight months ago, and were leading a happy life.
"In the evening, when I was going to mosque, my wife told me to lock the door from outside because she was going to sleep.
"Accordingly, I locked the door from behind and went to mosque. When I returned, saw huge fire.
"I tried to go inside but could not do so because of fire. Within a short time, the fire burned down the home. I could not save my wife," Sumon said and burst into tears.
Witnesses said Ilyas Mia's home is of tin shed two-storey building. There are 20 rooms- 10 on ground floor and 10 on second floor. Sumon-Sompa couple lived on ground floor.
Other tenants at the home managed to escape the fire but ill-fate Sompa met her tragic end as their house door was locked from outside, they added.
Abdullah Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, origin of the fire could not be known yet.
Sadar upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Nahida Barik said Tk 20,000 donation has been provided to the victim's husband from upazila administration.
