16 killed in Kasba train collision

At least 16 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a collision between two passenger trains in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria early Tuesday but the death toll could rise.

Among the deceased, seven were identified as Sajibur Rahman, 55, Yeasin, 28, Sujan Ahmed, 28, Kulsum Begum, 30, Alamin, 30, Yusuf, 32, and Adiba, 2 of Chandpur district. 

The fatal accident took place when inter-city 'Udayan Express' and 'Turna Nishitha train' trains collided in crossing of Mandabhag Station on Dhaka-Chattogram Railway around 2:45am.

Since the incident, rail communication of capital Dhaka with Sylhet remained suspended.

Akhaura Railway Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Shyamal Kanti Das confirmed the matter.

Chattogram-bound Udayan Express train from Sylhet and Chattogram-bound Turna Nishita Express collided. Several bogies of both trains were derailed, leaving 15 people death.

Among the dead, nine died on the spot and the rest died later, the OC added.

Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Doula Khan said they primarily assume Turna Nishitha train entered the line defying signal and hit Udayan Express.

But actually what was reason behind the incident, would be known after investigation, he added.
