BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid jailed for 5 years

A court has sentenced BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid to 5 years imprisonment and fined him Tk 50 lakh in a tax-evasion case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). 

Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judges’ Court-4 passed the order on Monday. 

The court also sentenced two other convicts - private television channel 9 Managing Director Mohammad Enayetur Rahim and car businessman Ishtiaq Sadek - to two years and three years jail respectively.

Rahim was also fined Tk 1 lakh, in default, he will have to serve extra two months in jail while Sadek was filed Tk 40 lakh, in default, he will have to serve extra six months in jail.

The ACC filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station against the trio for evading tax while purchasing cars on March 17, 2007.

Monayem Hossain, Assistant Director of the ACC, submitted the charge sheet to the court against them on July 18. 

The court started the trial against them taking the charge sheet into cognizance on August 20.
