A trial tribunal here today convicted three persons and sentenced them to death and four others to life in prison on charge of slaughtering a mother and his son to death in the district around five years back, reports BSS.
The convicted people in collaboration with each other hacked Aklima Begum, 45, and his son Jahid Hassan, 25, of Dewla village under Bagmara Upazila in the district to death simultaneously in the night of November 24, 2014.
Judge of Rajshahi Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Anup Kumar pronounced the verdict around 11.30 am giving capital punishment to Abul Hossain, 53, Habibur Rahman, 40, and Abdur Razzaque, 35.
The life-awarded convicts are: Abdullah Al Kafi, 22, Ruhul Amin, 30, Rustam Ali, 26, and Monirul Islam, 23. They were also fined Taka 10,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more behind the bar.
Referring to the prosecution story Special Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque told the journalists that previous enmity over a piece of disputed land was the main reason behind the double murder.
He said Dulal Hossain, elder son of deceased Aklima Begum, had lodged case with Bagmara Police Station on the following morning. Finally, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) investigated into the case and upon its completion PBI Inspector Alamgir Hossain pressed charges accusing seven persons on May 31, 2018.
After examining the recorded depositions of 47 prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences the tribunal handed down the verdict.
Prosecutor Entazul said Aklima’s brother-in-law Abul Hossain and Habibur Rahman were the main planners of the killing as mentioned by three accused of the case in their confessional statement.
