The High Court on Sunday asked the legality of a government decision to impose 7.5 percent VAT on the tuition fee of students of private universities.The bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Ali and Justice JN Dev Chowdhury issued the ruling on Sunday afternoon in response to a writ petition filed by Barrister Hasan M Azim.The secretaries of finance and education, chairmen of the University Grants Commission and the National Board of Revenue (NBR) have been asked to explain within three weeks.In June 2010, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) proposed to impose 4.5% value added tax (VAT) on the private university tuition fees.It was originally proposed in the near Tk 3 trillion budget for 2015-16 fiscal placed in the parliament by Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
