547 more dengue patients hospitalised in 24 hrs

A total of 547 new patients infected with mosquito-borne disease dengue were admitted to different hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours till 8am on Thursday.

Of them, four were taken to hospitals with severe dengue, also known as dengue hemorrhagic, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), reports UNB.

Of the patients, 112 were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, 58 to Mitford Hospital, 27 to Dhaka Shishu Hospital, 63 to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, 30 to Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital, nine to Birdem Hospital, 18 to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital, 42 to Mugda Medical College Hospital, seven to BGB Hospital and 166 to different private hospitals.

Among the patients, 532 are from Dhaka city, nine from Chattogram, and one is from Barishal and Khulna each, said Dr Aysha Akter, DGHS assistant director.

Dengue has taken a serious turn this year with official figures showing 9,256 people getting infected from January till the date and nine of them losing their lives.

A dengue-infected man died on a running bus on his way home in Narail on Thursday.

Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, causes flu-like illness, and occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue.

Dengue viruses are spread to people through the bite of infected Aedes species mosquitoes.

There is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue, but early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below 1 percent.
