Manchester City Captain Vincent Kompany has confirmed he has played his last game for the club.
The Belgian refused to answer questions on his future before Saturday’s 6-0 FA Cup final win against Watford, fearing the focus would be diverted from the club’s pursuit of a domestic treble.
However, the 33-year-old released a statement on Sunday morning to confirm he will leave the club this summer.
The defender is out of contract in July and City were prepared to hand the Belgian a rolling one-year deal.
However, after winning three of the four competitions on offer this term, Kompany clearly feels it’s the right time to call a day on his 11-year association with City.
Kompany departs as a four-time title winner and the most decorated captain in City’s history. The defender is expected to continue his playing career and will announce his next move in due course. Kompany remains the captain of Belgium and wants to play in Euro 2020.
