JS body urges not to hike prices, adulterate food during Ramadan

Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food Ministry today asked the businessmen to refrain from food adulteration and keep the price of the essentials in tolerable limit during the ensuing Holy Ramadan that begins from next month, reports BSS.

“We [on behalf of the JS body on food ministry] are sincerely requesting you [all the businessmen ] not to make excessive profit through price hike of the essentials and adulteration of food during the month of Ramadan,” said Mohammad Nasim, chairman of the JS body on food ministry, at a press briefing emerging from a meeting held at the media center in Jatiya Sangsad in Dhaka.

Referring to the Ramadan, the JS body chief said “basically the holy Ramadan is a month for worship and the spirit of the month is to help each other, so, why our businessmen are making them busy with this illegal price hike of essentials and food adulteration?”

Nasim, also a senior leader of the ruling party, told the newsmen that a section the businessmen are involved in food and drug adulteration which is unforgivable offense.

He, however, said “we have to take necessary steps to combat such crimes.”

“The government will strengthen the anti-adulteration drive across the country as like as wiping out of the drugs and militancy from the country,” said Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder who is also a member of the body.

Committee members Nurul Islam Nahid and Whip Atiur Rahman Atique, food secretary Shahabuddin Ahmed, Director General of Food M Arifur Rahman Apu and Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) Chairman Mohammad Mahfuzul Hoque, among others, attended the briefing.
