State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru today said Bangladesh has developed a technology for producing pearls from indigenous oysters, reports BSS.
“Under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) is currently implementing ‘the Pearl Culture Development and Expansion Project’. It makes us possible to produce pearls from local oysters, he told parliament while responding to a question placed by lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam of Laxmipur-2.
Besides, he said, a research project continues to enhance the size, stability and glitter of the pearls.
Under the project, a modern pearl research laboratory was established, Khasru said, adding the pearl culture technology invented by the institute is being disseminated at farmer and entrepreneur levels.
He said researchers think that the pearl culture would help rural women get empowered.
