Awami League candidate Dr Syeda Zakia Noor Lipi, younger sister of former Awami League general secretary and public administration minister late Syed Ashraful Islam, was elected Member of Parliament unopposed from Kishoreganj-1 constituency, reports BSS.
Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Kishoreganj Md Sarwar Morshed Chowdhury declared her elected at his office on Monday evening as two other candidates withdrew their candidacy papers.
The two other candidates were Jatiya Party’s Mostaeen Billah and Ganatantri Party’s Bhupendra Chandra Bhowmik Dolon.
The re-election to the constituency was scheduled for February 28 as the seat fell vacant following the death of Syed Ashraf at a Bangkok hospital on Jan 3.
Ashraf, son of acting president of Bangladesh during the Liberation War and one of the four national leaders Syed Nazrul Islam, was elected as MP from the constituency for fifth consecutive term in December 30 polls.
But he died on the day when other elected MPs of 11th Jatiya Sangsad took oath.
