‘Begum’ editor Nurjahan’s hospitalized

Noted Bengali woman journalist and editor of the country’s first illustrated women’s weekly ‘Begum’, Nurjahan Begum, was earlier admitted to a city hospital for old age complications, has turned critical.Nurjahan who was admitted to the Square Hospital on Wednesday last with respiratory problems, including pneumonia, was shifted to the hospital’s intensive care unit on Saturday as her condition deteriorated, said hospital sources.Nurjahan, 91, earned repute as the pioneering woman journalist as she edited the weekly ‘Begum’ for over six decades as a mouthpiece of Bengali women.The magazine mainly carried write-ups of women as part of its motto to promote the backward Muslim womenfolk.
