Writ seeks stay on DNCC mayoral by-polls again

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court (HC) again seeking stay on the upcoming by-polls for the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

It also sought a stay order on the by-polls for the six wards of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Supreme Court lawyer Younus Ali Akand on Wednesday filed the writ petition with the concerned department of the HC.

Earlier on January 19, the HC rejected the writ petition filed challenging legality of the election schedule of DNCC and DSCC.

The court also lifted its earlier order that stayed the process for holding the by-polls and also discharged the rule issued questioning the legality of the election schedule.

On February 25, 2018, the Supreme Court asked the HC to expedite hearing and disposal of its previous rule that halted the by-election to DNCC mayoral post.

The process for holding the elections was to remain halted until the HC rule are disposed of, the court said.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.
