RMG workers continue agitation, set fire on bus

A group of Ready-made garment workers on Monday continued their agitation for the second consecutive days demanding some demands including salary hike.

They set fire on a bus at the round premises of the Airport area in the capital. Vehicular movement on both sides of the road from Uttara to Abdullahpur was suspended.

In the morning, the workers blocked the road in Gazipur and later they came to the road of Uttara as the police foiled their agitation in that area. They set fire on a bus of Ena Paribahan around 1:15pm.

Ershad, Duty officer of fire service headquarters’ control room, confirmed the news of fire to Jago News.

“We will take maximum 10 minutes to remove them from the road but we are showing maximum patience. We respect the reasonable demands of them and are trying to remove them from the spot by mutually understanding,” said Uttara West Police Station officer-in-charge Ali Hossain.

The apparel workers demanded minimum wage of Tk16,000 with Tk10,000 as basic salary. Some of their other demands include workers cannot be sacked by factory owners at any time without proper reason and around 51% salary boost for the older employees who had been working as helpers in the factories.
