EC asks parties, alliances to name final candidates by Dec 9

The Election Commission (EC) has asked the registered political parties to name their final candidates by December 9 in the parliamentary seats where the parties or alliances have more than one candidate, BSS reported.

On Sunday, the commission sent letters signed by its deputy secretary Md Abdul Halim Khan to the 39 registered parties.

In this regard, EC Joint Secretary Farhad Ahmmed Khan told BSS that the candidates of unregistered political parties who want to take part in the polls in symbols of other parties will have to submit nomination papers as candidates of concerned registered parties.

Some 3,065 nomination papers of 39 political parties and independent candidates were submitted to the EC. Of them, 786 papers were canceled by the returning officers on Sunday after scrutiny.

Khan said the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is December 9. On that day, those political parties and alliances, which have more than one candidate in each parliamentary seat, will have to inform about a single candidate while other nomination papers will be canceled, he added.

The EC joint secretary said if the political parties do not inform about a single candidate, valid candidates of alliances would take part in the polls in their respective symbols.

If there remains more than one candidate of a party in a seat, all nomination papers of the party in the concerned seat will be canceled, he added.
