DB arrests top BNP leader Rafiqul

Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Miah in a case filed against him for not submitting his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Barrister Rafiq was arrested from his Eskaton house on Tuesday.

The ADC of the Detective Branch ( DB-North), Shahjahan Saju, confirmed the matter. 

Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court has sentenced Rafiqul to three years in jail.

Judge Dr. Sheikh Golam Mahabub of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-6 on Tuesday passed the order in absence of him.

The court also fined the BNP leader Tk 50,000 and issued arrest warrant against him.

On April 7, 2001, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) gave a notice to then Hosing and Public World Minister Rafiqul Islam to submit his wealth statement by 45 days.

On September, 2004, ACC officer Liakot Hossain filed a case against the BNP leader as he didn’t submit his wealth statement within that time.
