Jatiya Oikyafront, an alliance of the BNP and several other parties, on Sunday decided to join the upcoming 11th general election.
Eminent jurist and the top leader of Oikyafront Dr Kamal Hossain announced this while briefing journalists at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
“We demand deferment of the current election schedule for one month and announcement of a new schedule,” said Dr. Kamal.
Earlier on Saturday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they will confirm on Sunday about their participation to the next election.
The election will be held on Dec 23, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said on Thursday.
The polls schedule came despite the Jatiya Oikyafront’s repeated requests not to declare the roadmap before resolving the crisis over the election.
As per the schedule, the 11th parliamentary elections will be held on 23 December (Sunday) while the last date for submitting nomination papers is 19 November, the date for scrutinising nomination papers is 22 November and the last date for the withdrawal of nomination papers is 29 November.
