The High Court (HC) today ordered Election Commission (EC) not to accept amended constitution of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali passed the order, asking the EC to dispose of a plea filed by one Mozammel Hossain, objecting the amended constitution of BNP, which excluded article seven that defined the ‘inefficiency’ of committee members, BSS reported.
The court asked the EC to dispose of the plea by 30 days.
A three-member BNP delegation led by Nazrul Islam Khan submitted the amended constitution of BNP to EC at the beginning of the year.
According to said article, persons, convicted, bankrupt, proven insane or corrupt will be deemed disqualified to become member of BNP’s national council, national executive committee, national standing committee, executive committees of any level or to contest in national parliamentary election.
The court today issued a rule asking local government secretary, chief election commissioner, election commission secretary, BNP acting chairman and secretary general to explain in four weeks as to why it shall not declare the amendment illegal and contrary to article 66 (2)(g) of the constitution.
